bionator appliance

????????

The Bionator is an orthodontic device designed to extend the lower jaw and correct overbite, which can lead to difficulties in chewing, tooth damage, and gum issues. It is particularly beneficial when the lower jaw is positioned behind the upper jaw, causing the upper teeth to protrude. Its popularity stems from its user-friendly design.

Although intended for continuous wear, the Bionator is removable, with exceptions for eating, brushing teeth, and during contact sports. Maintaining oral hygiene by cleaning the Bionator is also recommended.

**Purpose of the Bionator**

The primary goal of the Bionator is to encourage the growth of the lower jaw, guiding the natural development of dental tissues and bone forward. This alignment allows for proper contact between the upper and lower incisors, stress on teeth and gums caused by overbite. With aligned jaws, it facilitates lip sealing, proper mouth closure, and discourages mouth breathing.

By expanding the lower jaw, the Bionator increases space in the oral cavity and promotes correct tongue positioning, vital for the natural growth of dental arches and teeth. Additionally, it enhances aesthetics by improving smiles and facial structure growth, and in some cases, it can help alleviate TMJ issues in adults.

**Ideal for Bionator Use**

The Bionator is most effective when used during the developmental years, typically between ages 7 and 10, allowing jaw and muscles to grow into the desired position. At skeletal maturity, its structural benefits diminish, though it can still assist in repositioning teeth.

**Types of Bionators**

1. **Bionator I**: Designed to open the bite, this version addresses closed bites and improves jaw relationships by covering the lower front teeth with acrylic, preventing contact with the mouth's roof while guiding molar and premolar eruption.

2. **Bionator II**: This type corrects open bites, where upper and lower front teeth do not meet when the mouth is closed. It covers the back teeth with acrylic and allows the front teeth to erupt fully, closing the gap while positioning the tongue against the roof of the mouth.

3. **Standard Bionator**: This appliance gently moves the lower jaw forward without altering vertical dimensions, covering both the front and back teeth of the lower jaw and ensuring the tongue is correctly positioned.
